We just hope TextExpander’s primary keyboard is as good as other alternative keyboards. Insert custom email signatures, fill forms, customize when to insert expansions, see statistics, use case-sensitive shortcuts, and more. If TextExpander’s Mac OS X app is anything to go by, this will be a huge keyboard app. QuickBoard works as a secondary keyboard that you switch to using the Globe icon when you need it, whereas TextExpander acts as both the primary and the secondary keyboard. While TextExpander and the previously covered QuickBoard solve the same problem – typing regularly repeated text snippets quickly – their execution is fairly different. It is a fairly short video, lasting no more than twenty seconds, but it does give us a slight glimpse of how one of the most popular desktop text expansion tools will look like on iOS 8. Smile Software recently released a sneak preview of TextExpander for iOS 8. TextExpander Will Significantly Boost Text Expansion For iOS 8 Agreed, this covers most text expansion cases, but they are hardly enough for seasoned text expansion enthusiasts. You just add a shortcut and expansion phrase (so that, say, expands to your email address), and that is it. You can manage them from Settings > General > Keyboard. We appreciate Apple for including text expansion into iOS long before other platforms, but the fact of the matter is that it is primitively basic. Since iOS 6, Apple has included system-wide text expansion in the form of ‘Keyboard Shortcuts’. Now we will be discussing TextExpander, which boosts text expansion for iOS 8. There’s Minuum with its radically shape-shifting key design, and Ginger Keyboard for advanced editing, translation, and customization. We have discussed several alternative keyboards for iOS 8 so far. ![]()

![]() Testing these tools in depth requires many months of in-the-trenches work, but a cursory look at the features shows that the interface is clear and plenty of fun. It also allows you to monitor through the Apple binaural renderer, which lets you preview your mixes in spatial audio on Apple Music. In March 2022, the 10.7.3 update enabled spatial audio monitoring with dynamic head tracking on the AirPods Max, the AirPods Pro, the AirPods (3rd Generation), and the Beats Fit Pro. Additionally, the company revamped Logic Pro’s mixer to support metering and panning for speaker configurations up to 7.1.4. Apple has also expanded 13 of its bundled plug-ins to support these surround effects, including new spaces for Sound Designer. Logic Pro now comes with a Dolby Atmos rendering plug-in to visualize these objects in the mix and monitor in multi-channel mode, either using a discrete speaker system or even binaurally in standard studio headphones. To get there, Apple includes a new 3D Object Panner, which you can use to position special effects or even the occasional instrument in three-dimensional space. The idea is that you can create mixes with elevation control, moving objects in the soundscape around and even above you. With Logic Pro, you can now create Spatial Audio mixes and Dolby Atmos files that will play back natively in Apple Music. This finally brings the overall sound quality level of streaming services back to the equivalent of CDs and even surpassing it in some cases. As consumers have already seen, Apple Music now plays back thousands of tracks in these formats, and more importantly, it (along with Spotify and others) now plays music back in lossless encoding. ![]() The big news in version 10.7 is the introduction of Spatial Audio support with Dolby Atmos integration. The mixer faders and meters also remained fixed in size, offering little of the configurability you’ll find in other DAWs such as Cubase, Digital Performer, and Reaper. It’s all a little flatter and cleaner than before, although you still can’t do much with the color scheme. As long as you're logged into the Apple Store with your account, you can download, install, and run it seamlessly.įor version 10.7, Apple saw fit to refresh the UI again, making its usual incremental and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it changes to the overall look. As always, Logic Pro doesn't require hardware or software copy protection. To install everything, including all the packaged synths, instruments, loops, and effects, you need to set aside 72GB. To get started with Logic Pro 10.7, you need a recent Mac running macOS 11.0 or later and 6GB of free space for the base program. If you're a new customer, it still only costs a reasonable $199.99. Unless you need Avid Pro Tools for compatibility with other studios, or you want to stick with another program simply because you're more familiar with it, Logic Pro remains the top choice for DAWs, and it remains an Editors' Choice winner.Īpple Logic Pro is free, if you're upgrading. Now with the ability to create Spatial Audio mixes in Dolby Atmos, version 10.7 puts even more pressure on its well-established digital audio workstation (DAW) competitors. Today, Logic Pro offers pro-level audio editing at a bargain price for multitrack recording, film scoring, sound design, and post. Her name is probably derived from the Greek words amphis and tris, “the surrounding third.” Her son Tritôn was similarly named “of the third.” Clearly “the third” is the sea, although the reason for the term is obscure. Sometimes her hair is enclosed with a net and her brow adorned with a pair of crab-claw “horns”. In mosaic art the goddess usually rides beside her husband in a chariot drawn by fish-tailed horses or hippokampoi. The dolphin-god Delphin eventually tracked her down and persuaded her to return to wed the sea-king.Īmphitrite was depicted in Greek vase painting as a young woman, often raising her hand in a pinching gesture. When Poseidon first sought Amphitrite’s hand in marriage, she fled his advances, and hid herself away near Atlas in the Ocean stream at the far ends of the earth. Although famous for his work on fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis, he had also done other work on mitochondrial metabolism and he was a real mito‐insider. Soon after the publication of this Nature letter, the Slater lab was visited by Feodor Lynen, Nobel laureate, and shrewd biochemist. Only tidbits were sent to Nature and published without peer‐review, because the editor did not consider that necessary for papers from reputable labs. High‐impact journals had not been invented yet and substantial experimental work was sent to BBA, JBC, or Biochem. This may seem incredible today, but the time was 1959. This result was sent off to Nature and published without delay. I checked this with rat‐liver mitochondria oxidizing glutamate-the favorite substrate of the time-with clear‐cut results: glutamate oxidation by isolated mitochondria required Pi, even when the mitochondria were completely uncoupled. This was an important detail, because it was not known at the time whether the postulated high‐energy intermediate in OXPHOS contained phosphate. For a further refinement of his hypothesis, Slater often asked a student to check a detail, in my case whether the respiratory chain required also inorganic phosphate (Pi) when it was uncoupled from ATP synthesis by the addition of the uncoupler dinitrophenol. One of the giants of the early history of mitochondrial metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), Slater had formulated the chemical hypothesis for the mechanism of OXPHOS (see Reference 2), which was generally accepted before Peter Mitchell entered the scene with his revolutionary chemi‐osmotic hypothesis. In looking for more fruitful topics, I ended up with the malate–aspartate shuttle (MAS).Īt the time I was a student in the lab of Bill Slater, They were certainly not uncoupled, as postulated by the formidable German Nobel laureate Otto Warburg. In vain, I tried to find anything abnormal. This illustrates the vitality of ongoing MAS research.Īs a student, I studied the properties of tumor mitochondria in Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. ![]() ![]() The year 2019 saw the discovery of two new inborn errors in the MAS, deficiencies in malate dehydrogenase 1 and in aspartate transaminase 2 (GOT2). Most recently, the focus has been on the role of the MAS in tumors, on cells with defects in mitochondria and on inborn errors in the MAS. The MAS is still a very active field of research. This makes the MAS in practice uni‐directional toward oxidation of cytosolic NADH, and explains why the free NADH/NAD ratio is much higher in the mitochondria than in the cytosol. Only in the 1970s, LaNoue and coworkers discovered that the efflux of aspartate from mitochondria, an essential step in the MAS, is dependent on the proton‐motive force generated by the respiratory chain: for every aspartate effluxed, mitochondria take up one glutamate and one proton. The MAS was soon adopted in the field as a major pathway for NADH oxidation in mammalian tissues, such as liver and heart, even though the energetics of the MAS remained a mystery. The MAS was initially proposed as a route for the oxidation of cytosolic NADH by the mitochondria in Ehrlich ascites cell tumor lacking other routes, and to explain the need for a mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase 2 ). This article presents a personal and critical review of the history of the malate–aspartate shuttle (MAS), starting in 1962 and ending in 2020. ![]() ![]() ![]() He certainly hasn’t always been the most likeable guy… but he’s always been vigilant.” It has not always been pretty he’s had some really ugly turns. What’s been fun about playing him, to the best of my ability, is to portray a realistic ascent to heroism. Only through chance or fate, if you choose to believe in it, he gets pulled into this much larger world than he ever wanted or expected to be in and that he’s totally unprepared for. “We you meet him originally, he’s this cocky, a bit arrogant, naïve guy who has literally run from the responsibilities of his life and found himself in the middle of fucking nowhere. ![]() “What I’ve loved so much about playing Holden is just how vast his arc is,” he says. Holden’s past has also informed his current situation, and the character’s evolution to this point has been very satisfying for Strait. There’s always the fear of, ‘Am I relying on a crazy person, and he’s just been right in the beginning?’ So going through this gate, depending on somebody that he’s really close with but doesn’t really know 100 percent where his sanity is, is going to trust and be loyal to him and back him up in every way he can.” But he doesn’t necessarily know that he believes it’s Miller in there, and he doesn’t really know exactly what’s going on. “He believes Holden to a point, in the fact that everything that he’s said so far has been true and helped us, so he believes that. “He has somebody he’s really close to, that he relies on and leans upon, talking to dead people and ghosts,” says Chatham. For Holden, that’s where we find him at the beginning of season 4.”Ĭhatham admits that this normalization of Holden’s inner voice isn’t always easy for Amos. For him as a guy, he’s settling into the extraordinary circumstances that he’s found himself in, in a much more grounded way than we’ve seen in previous years… He’s finally at a place where the people around him have given him the support he’s needed over the years to actually become the leader he needs to be and they need him to be. There’s no terror or shock or awe to what’s going on with him anymore. “He’s accepted that this is part of his existence now. “For Holden, having this ongoing relationship with this ghost in his mind has become more normalized,” says Strait. Ostensibly, Holden and the Roci will be set on their diplomatic mission by Avasarala in The Expanse season 4 premiere, but it’s Holden’s visions of Miller, speaking on behalf of the protomolecule, that drive him to go through the Ring to find out what happened to the ancient civilization that made interstellar travel possible. This season, we will get a window and a glimpse of who he is beyond the external thing that he created to show the world and protect himself.” ![]() “As they go through this season, who he is and what’s motivating and what’s driving him is starting to come to the surface. “Being back in an atmosphere and the fresh air awakening things in him that he hasn’t felt in a long time, reminding him of Earth and where he grew up, and that’s kind of awakening dormant memories from his past,” says Chatham. That being said, Amos’ impoverished past has uniquely prepared him for roughing it on an alien planet. We’re on this planet, and we’re not bathing regular. Chatham adds, “It’s also a primal journey because we’ve taken a step back in our technology. ![]() “Our beard arc tracks how far away from civilization or clippers we’ve been for all these months,” Strait explains with a smile. “Ilus is the next hall over,” Chatham informs us, referring to the distant planet on which the Rocinante crew find themselves in season 4, mediating a dispute between Belter and Earther settlers who seek to profit from the resources beyond the Ring gates.Ĭhatham and Strait are both dressed in dusty, rugged clothes with mussed hair and longer beards than we’ve seen them sport in seasons past: a clear indication that the planet of Ilus is a frontier world, brand new to humans but long dead to the protomolecule-makers. It is here that we incongruously meet with Steven Strait and Wes Chatham, who play James Holden and Amos Burton on the show, neither of whom spend any time on Mars. Behind one flat is the UN situation room on Earth where Avasarala is briefed on military operations in deep space, and around a corner is a rocky underground public space on Mars, illuminated colorfully to break up the red stone walls. Walking across the set of The Expanse can be a fairly surreal experience in that distances between planets are compressed to a few steps. ![]() ![]() I’m always breaking guitars too, it must be my sedate and laid-back style (laughs). What I needed was a supply of these guitars at any time, because live, when you start using a lot of different guitars, when you switch the guitars inevitably sound different or feel different or don’t react to the amp in the same way. But I had an idea for a guitar that I kinda put together I had a prototype I was using on tour, three of them actually, that were put together by myself, my guitar tech Elwood, and a friend of mine named Joe Despagni – he owns a company called Jem Guitars that makes custom guitars. “Basically, every company approached me for endorsements, and a lot of them make very fine products. Getting a big endorsement deal was not his objective getting the best guitar was. Numerous guitar manufacturers were already clamoring for Vai’s endorsement, and Steve sent spec sheets to many of these companies to see who could best suit his needs. Suddenly thrust into arenas and the spotlight, his equipment needs changed, and it was time to design a new guitar, of which he could have several made to take on tour. It is a guitar designed by Steve Vai, to be the ultimate guitar for his personal tastes and idiosyncrasies, and it seems that guitar players all over the world agree that it is the ultimate rock guitar, blending the best features of historical favorites with visionary advancements. In 1985 Steve Vai had just stepped into the most coveted and perhaps the most highly scrutinized position in the guitar world at that time guitarist for David Lee Roth, who had just departed from Van Halen. Project leaders hope to expand the network to multiple facilities across the state's six major islands. The phrase 'Pupukahi i Holomua' is Hawaiian for "unite in order to progress." With this spirit in mind, the Holomua Project to Improve Transitional Care in Hawaii launched a four-year project to help community health centers and hospitals improve care for their shared patients transitioning between the participating CHCs and hospitals. More information on the project is available at. In addition, the team trained over 100 HMVR end-users across three health care facilities, created policies and procedures for transitioning patients, and increased partners’ awareness of managing patients who visited multiple facilities. The collaborators successfully developed and implemented a live health information exchange involving approximately 250,000 patients, 150 clinician users, and 500,000 visits.
